1. Stop Weeds Before They Grow

Using a preventative weed fighter is the best way to a greener, healthier lawn. Treat your lawn with a pre-emergence herbicide like Scotts Lawn Pro-Step 1. This will help prevent weeds from popping up around your lawn in the first place. Plus, you only have to use pre-emergent herbicide once a year. It’s best to treat your lawn early in the spring before flowers and plants start to grow.

If you already have lawn weeds, you can pull or dig them up. You can also use a post-emergence herbicide, which will kill the weeds you have. We carry Bonide Weed & Feed and Scotts Lawn Pro Step 2. However, it’s better to take preventative steps to get rid of weeds.

2. Maintain Your Lawn Mower

It’s also important to maintain your lawn mower. As spring rolls around, you should prepare your lawn mower for another season of work. This means cleaning the engine, changing the oil filter and fuel, cleaning the undercarriage and sharpening the lawn mower blade, or purchasing a new one. Come see us for all the supplies you need.

If you do not want to tackle this project we have a certified small engine mechanic here that would be happy to do that for you.

3. Water your Lawn in the Morning

The best time to water you lawn is between 6 and 10 a.m. because your lawn will have the entire day to dry. You can also water your lawn between 4 and 7 p.m. if you don’t have time in the morning. Avoid watering between 11 a.m.and 3 p.m. because it is the hottest part of the day and most of the water will just evaporate.

Come in and see all of the watering supplies we carry. Hoses, Hose reels, sprinklers and timers.

4. Fertilize Your Lawn

Using 12-12-12 fertilizer at the right time can help you achieve a lush green lawn. Start in late May – early June, apply 2-3 time till mid August. Do not apply fertilizer after that as it is getting ready to go dormant.

With Scotts Lawn Pro 4 Step Program you can create a lawn maintenance schedule for a year-round fertilizing program.

5. Reseed Bald Spots

Those small spots that just don’t come back as nice as you would like can be filled in and reseeded using Pennington Kwik Grass Seed or Pennington Smart Seed for Sun & Shade.

6. Over Seed Your Lawn

You can over seed your lawn between August 25 and October 10 when there is less weed growth and moisture in the soil for proper germination. Using a 3 Way Rye Grass Blend, Tall Fescue, Kentucky Blue Grass or a Premium Grass Seed mix. This will give it time to fill in completely for winter and you will have a denser lawn next spring.
